java.lang.NullPointerException error when running Phire compare

We get the following error when attempting to run a Phire compare:

Java Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException: during call of (2,763) PHI_FUNCLIB.PHI_COMPARE.FieldFormula  Name:PHI_RunCompare

What causes this and how can this be resolved?

In Phire v10.2.01 and prior, this error indicates that the “.guiffy” folder is not placed in the proper location on the Phire application server. The installation document for those versions asks us to install it in the user folder for the user account that starts the Phire application server. Sometimes, this situation arises when the appserv process is suddenly started by a different user than normal. Or if the “.guiffy” folder is mistakenly deleted as part of some server maintenance.

In Phire v10.2.02 and after, this error has been resolved by placing a provided “phire.key” file in the root of the working directory for the domain setup. In this way, it’s no longer relevant what user starts the appserv process, and there is no confusion about what user folder to use. For customers upgrading from an older release of Phire, any copies of the “.guiffy” folder in the application server can be deleted when the provided “phire.key” file is added to the working directory.
